MOQ (minimum order quantity) is often the first hurdle for small UK retailers who want to buy direct from India. Here's how it works.
Why manufacturers set minimums
Every style needs fabric bought in bulk, patterns graded across sizes and machines set up. Minimums make that setup worthwhile for the factory.
Typical MOQs
- Large export factories: often several hundred pieces per style and colour.
- Mid-sized manufacturers: commonly 50–100 pieces per style.
- Factory-direct brands with ready designs: can go much lower, because the fabric and patterns already exist.
MOQ per design vs per order
Check whether the minimum applies to each design or to the whole order. "12 per design" means each style you pick needs at least 12 pieces, split across sizes.
Tips for small shops
- Start with 2–4 designs to test what sells.
- Choose a sensible size split, for example weighted towards S, M and L.
- Order samples first to check quality.
- Reorder the winners.
