India is one of the world's biggest clothing producers, and since July 2026 it has become even easier for UK retailers to buy from Indian manufacturers. Here's what you need to know.
1. Import duty: now zero on qualifying goods
The India–UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) came into force in July 2026. Qualifying Indian-made textiles and clothing now enter the UK with zero import duty, provided the supplier gives you valid proof of origin.
2. VAT still applies
Import VAT is charged on goods entering the UK. If you're VAT-registered you can usually reclaim it, but factor it into your cash flow.
3. Understand minimum order quantities
Many Indian factories ask for 100+ pieces per style. Smaller, factory-direct brands often accept far less. At House of Jamoti, it's 12 pieces per design.
4. Order samples first
Always check fabric, colour, fit and finish before a bulk order. Samples cost more per piece than your wholesale price: at House of Jamoti, they are charged at twice the wholesale price.
5. Plan for delivery time
Air freight is fastest. Sea freight is cheaper but can take several weeks. A supplier that handles export paperwork and ships door-to-door takes the hassle out of customs.
6. Agree payment terms upfront
Advance payments are standard for first orders. Make sure terms, lead times and what happens if something arrives damaged are agreed in writing.
